Final review and summary

Final review:

A few final notes. The boot-up is about 3-5 seconds from off to playing music after pressing the power button. It will resume the music exactly where you left it when turning it off.

What is really impressive about this package is the price, size and capacity, the codec support is good and it will satisfy the need of 99% of the mp3 market, video synching is perfect with no japanese martial arts film dubbing syndrome and there is no stutter buffer. The picture viewing works great and the pictures are of high quality and are easy to see in all lighting conditions.

Voice recording is one of the more useful modes which allows you to make notes as you are wandering through life otherwise oblivious to your surroundings and the Fuze can be held a distance away from your mouth so there is no distortion.

The radio is of similar usability with easy station browsing, easy to add to presets and the reception is of a very high standard too.

The headphones that come with this unit fit well and sound good, the volume going higher than you would expect and if running or similarly exercising hard you don't need to turn the unit to full blast and yet can still hear environmental sounds without it being drowned out. The build quality is solid and it has a generous weight to be noticable but not one where you feel it could bounce away when running where you would not miss it. The screen does attract fingerprints like all devices of this type but has resisted all attempts to scratch it up to now.

Expansion works well, simply buy another SD card and plug it in, and you are ready to go.
Navigation around the unit is intuitive and the scroling buttons easy to find when the unit is not directly in front of you.

You can also add files from commonly known software such as winamp and windows media player without fuss and the database updates automatically and doesn't take that long at all, maybe 30 seconds for a completely full player. You will find that the boot up is about 5 seconds from cold and it starts from where you left it when the Sansa Fuze was turned off. The actual inbuilt usable memory is about 7.8gb, plenty enough for most applications.

A non-proprietary dock connection may be useful in future models

With options for pink case covers too or an optional black unit there is one to suit all tastes.

Final Scoring:
If I was to give this a rating it would be 4.7 out of 5, there are always to be updates to the firmware that can be done and little things like making a standard recharge point next time but this is minor. I have not yet encountered a more usuable, reliable and impressive mp3 player yet for the price. In future models I might hope they will not use a proprietary dock connection but this is a fantastic bargain as it is.

At current time of writing the price is £70 however with a little searching you may be able to shave a few pounds off. The price is still a great one for such a well made machine.
