Lee Child 61 Hours

Synopsis

South Dakota is cold, freezing under ice and the roads are deadly as a storm brews overhead and a bus skids to a crash, stranding its senior passengers in a town called Bolton with a newly built prison full of drug dealers including one awaiting trial and the key witness to the case is under police protection. The deputy asks Jack Reacher for his help and to keep the witness safe. In a style reminiscent of the best of Jack Bauer days it becomes a countdown against time, against 61 hours.

Lee Child

Description

61 Hours is a solid novel, it is not one of the best but it is far from being one of the worst as well, giving us twists and turns and pacing momentum with added tension to a gripping ending and Lee Child seems to have listened to earlier criticisms of his books that Jack seems nigh on invincible, always ends up with a girl and has the mental deductive powers of all the worlds super-scientists rolled into one. In this novel he doesn't show all that, he even gets things wrong from time to time.

This book tells us a little about his army days, following on from previous novels of how he became who he is and he starts developing relationships that are a lot more honest than they had been in earlier novels. While he is not infallible he does see things quicker than most, being described in the book as the sort of guy who sees something "5 seconds before the rest of the world"

This book is not a standalone, it is the first Lee Child book that continues into another novel, expected to be published in 4-6 months and while it may be frustrating to fans to have the wait it can be relived by reading previous books and going over familiar territory.

There are other twists and characters to meet but why should I ruin it for you?

Reviews

All of this is typically suspenseful fare (in fact, the real surprise would be if it weren’t -- Child is one of the most reliable writers on the face of the planet). And there’s an ending quite unlike any other Jack Reacher novel you have read. Lee Child aficionados need not hesitate. --Barry Forshaw

Review

Child has somehow forged that magical grail: a new and believable hero. Reacher is strong, tall, principled and a quiet master in unarmed combat...giving us addicts a new and mesmerising fix, when we thought all the heroes had been written.

THIS IS A JOKE OF A BOOK. 400 PAGES AND NOTHING HAPPENS. THEN JUST WHEN YOU THINK THINGS ARE TAKING OFF: "TO BE CONTINUED"!

What a waste of time. Lee Child is a cop out. I've bought all previous books but never again. TO BE CONTINUED - thanks a bunch LEE!!!

The trouble with writing as i am sure you know from being here though is it is much harder to keep coming up with new titles all the time with fresh stories, much better to make a bumper book and split it in two, I have known some books though where I have been waiting 10 years, not 6 months so don't be so hard on him :p

"....so don't be so hard on him".

Why not? Did it say "part 1" in the title or sub-title?

If he can't write a proper book any more, he should either wait until he can, or quit. I hope he loses a lot of faithful readers over this.

Do longstanding soaps that should've been ended years ago ever claim that they are just parts of a story?

When you wrote your only 2 hubs over 15 months (each with less than 100 words) did you tell people that is all you were ever going to write so they would know in advance not to bother wasting their time?

Things happen, schedules change.

He is a good writer anyway, so people will read his books and if they become of a far larger scope due to this then that can only be a good thing.

"When you wrote your only 2 hubs over 15 months (each with less than 100 words)"

Not quite sure I get your drift - but if you are indeed somehow referring to me, I don't think I claim to be an author with a following - unless of course, you know different?

My point is you only have two hubs with barely 200 words between them so are not qualified to be a critic of a best selling author.

First get to 500 words, then a 1000, then 20,000 then 50,000+ then we will talk ;)

You will see that when you get to 1,000+ words on a single subject it becomes harder and harder to come back and keep expanding on it...even more so when you have to keep on coming up with new and original devices.
